Word of the Week – “Health” – What does Health Really Mean
Hello, friends! I'm Dr. Kris, a doctor who's spent 10 years helping people feel better in busy emergency rooms and quiet hospital beds. Today, let's talk about a simple word we hear all the time: "health." It's not a big, scary term—it's something we all chase every day.
What Is Health?
Health is like being your best self. It does not refer to just catching the common cold or getting the stomach flu. True health means your body feels strong enough to do the everyday physical activity that we sometimes take for granted, your mind stays calm and joyous even on tough days, and your spirit feels full and connected to God (Whatever religion or non-religious ideals you may subscribe to) and the world around you. Think of it as a sturdy tree: deep roots for steady feelings, green leaves for energy, and branches that reach out to hug your family and friends.
In short, health is the power to live your life fully—laughing, learning, and loving without big roadblocks getting in the way.
How Do We Chase Health Today?
In our busy world full of phones and fast food, doctors like me team up with a whole crew to help you stay healthy. Although it can be difficult with the fast-paced style of healthcare these days, we start with easy check-ups at the doctor's office, where we listen to your heart, peek at your smile, and chat about how you're sleeping and eating. It's like a friendly pit stop to make sure your body's engine is humming along. As I tell some of my patients, “Even a Ferrari has to come off the road sometimes to get a tube-up before getting back out to the road.”
We also love simple habits: munching colorful fruits and veggies, getting activity in a pool or kicking a ball, and meditation and mindfulness when worries bubble up. New tools make it fun too—like smart watches that count your steps or apps that remind you to sip water and stretch.
If something feels off, our modern system jumps in quick. Hospitals and medical institutions have, through years of research and innovation, developed the ability to do advanced diagnostic tests such as CT scans to get more information that can be important in improving your health. We work together—doctors, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, techs, physical therapists, pharmacists and even chefs, who whip up nutritious meals if you are hospitalized.
The goal? Not just fixing problems, but building a strong, happy you for the long haul.
Health isn't perfect all the time—nobody's a superhero every day. But with small steps and a little help, we can all grow toward it. What's one healthy thing you'll try today? I'd love to hear! Post a comment to the article on a social platform to let us know!
